WASHINGTON — The District of Columbia is launching its first-ever cannabis tax holiday. The 10-day tax exemption began on April 15 and will finish on April 24th. Qualified individuals who consult a doctor can pick up their marijuana tax-free at a certified medicinal marijuana shop.
The statement was made Tuesday inside D.C.'s sole registered medical marijuana store east of the river by the head of D.C.'s Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration.
Linda Mercado Greene founded Anacostia Organics in the centre of downtown Anacostia in 2019, only two streets from her house.
"My study discovered that 25% of medical cannabis cardholders resided in Wards 7 and 8, and they had no access to their medication in their own neighbourhood," Greene said. "I live in a place that has been greatly damaged by the drug war, and it has a thriving open-air drug market." We've done a lot of education with ANCs, churches, and community groups since I launched."
The District currently has seven approved medicinal marijuana stores. According to ABRA, the multimillion-dollar business is expanding, with over 13,000 patients served in only one month.
"I have so many patients who come in and thank me for not just building a beautiful dispensary in their neighbourhood that they can be proud of, but also for giving them access to excellent, inspected, lab-tested medicine," Greene said.
However, many company owners have reported that their patients are fleeing for unregulated marijuana dispensaries. Those stores take use of the law's gifting provision by selling other things and then giving out cannabis. Customers are not required to see a doctor or purchase a membership card. Legislation to impose fines on giving firms failed in the DC council.
The tax break now helps to eliminate some of those barriers. If you're under the age of 65, you still need to consult a doctor, but D.C. is waiving the 6% sales tax for the next week, and those membership cards are free.
"Previously, the card was only good for a year and cost $100," ABRA director Fred Moosally noted. "Right now, we're offering a free two-year card through April 24." The District also has one of the greatest reciprocity schemes in the country, allowing out-of-state cards to travel to the District to buy."
"I think D.C. will be the shining beacon in how to get this right in our country," Greene concluded.
Despite the fact that Congress has prohibited recreational cannabis sales in D.C., Greene remains hopeful about the future of cannabis in the nation's capital. She claims that the tax break aids her purpose of service and social equality. Greene is the president of the Cannabis Trade Association in Washington, D.C., and a member of the US Cannabis Council's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Task Force.
"I've seen people fall out and die on the streets right here in my neighbourhood," she said. "So it's worth it because I'm all about serving and have always been."
